Li Rentai oversees high-speed flight research, advanced materials, clean propulsion and technology demonstrations. He is the agency executive for the Swift X-2 research program.

Li previously directed the National Aeronautics Laboratory and served as chief engineer for hydrogen-assisted turbine experiments.
